SANDING

Solid Timber Floors takes great pride in sanding your floor to the best standards possible.

Each floor to be sanded is different and demands a unique approach to succeed. We use mainly German build equipment which is assuring for having the best tools available at your job. Vacuum suction sanding gear eliminates the vast majority of dust. The purpose of sanding is to clear the floor of all previous coats, level out all un-eveness, remove all tacks, nails and any other surface protruding objects -  and then fine-sanding the entire floor area to a very high granularity. This will bring out the best shine and character your floor boards afford.  The three different finishes we can achieve for you - these being a “smooth finish”, an “oiled and natural finish” and a “rustic look finish” depending on your preference and selection.

We make ourselves available to meet with you for a full evaluation of your specific project and show you what is possible. For beautiful floors at reasonable rates please contact us.

Below are some of the common questions already addressed.

Sanding : Questions & Answers

DUST OR NO DUST

Our top of the line European sanding machinery does have very good dust collection system which greatly minimizes the dust levels created whilst sanding your floors. Also, we regularly change our dust bags. Our vacuum systems eliminate dust up to 98%.

Where required, we cover your areas and equipment sensitive to dust, in particular electronic equipment such as TVs, stereos and alike. This includes some kitchen areas, bath room and living areas. Where available all external doors and windows will be open for the duration of the sanding to also minimize any dust. The floor areas are vacuumed several times throughout the job and windows sills, skirting and bench tops are also vacuumed during and on completion of the job. However, we cannot always control the environment; hence there may be traces of dust left behind.

DARK STAINS AND MARKS AROUND OLD NAIL HOLES

Often caused by old water stains, the wood suffered undesired discolouration mainly around nails and the wet areas. Our experience shows that water stains may not always sand away. It depends how deep into the timber they have developed. It will only be apparent once we commence sanding on these areas. No guarantees that water marks will ever come out with sanding; board replacement can solve this issue.  Alternatively, we can stain your floors dark to match or hide these marks. However, all too often they add a nice character to the floor afterwards. We are happy to discuss the options.

OTHER TRADESMEN AROUND

For safety reasons all other tradesman must be away from the floors. The floor sander requires full attention on his machinery and floors and cannot worry about tradesman, tools and objects getting in the way. It is imperative there are no more tradesmen left working on your project while your floor receives its final coat. Traces of silicone carried on the foot wear of plumbers, tillers and glaziers can be a very serious problem as it causes a reaction in the polyurethane. Please make these tradespeople or your project manager aware of this.

Carpet should not be laid till at least 24 hours after the final coat is applied to your timber, as the fibres float through the air and land in the drying polyurethane.  Once the final coat is applied, you must stay off your floor until the floor sander has advised you may walk on it again, even opening windows and doors can blow dust in to land in the coat before it dries. Don't be tempted to walk on it if it looks dry enough, foot prints have to be sanded out!

FLOOR SANDING COMES BEFORE THE INSTALLATION OF A NEW CARPET

It is recommended that floor sanding and polyurethaning to be done first, shortly followed by laying the carpet.  New carpet can create a lot of unwanted dust that can affect the wet polyurethane, thus giving it a dusty speckled finish.

NAIL HOLES, CRACKS AND CHIPS

Some floors require nail hole filling to give a uniform look while other floors should not be filled to keep it unique rustic look. Nail hole filling is a customer preference. Your floor sander will recommend whether to fill or not at the time of the initial quote. However the final decision is the customers.

CARPET REMOVAL, TACKS, NAILS AND STAPLES

Within reason and as part of our quote, we will remove tacks, staples, nails, black tar underlay paper and other metal objects. Where excessive work is required, we will charge for extra work. The uplift and removal of carpets is an additional cost which falls outside our regular work, but will be discussed and added to the quote.

RE-SANDING MY FLOOR

Most timber floors have 3 or 4 sands in them, if sanded properly. This all depends on the condition of the floor and the workmanship of the previous sanders. Upon viewing your floor, we will advise about the best option forward.
